Emergence is a dynamic organization that connects social justice and environmental organizations, faith groups, educators, artisans, activists and interested individuals. We bring people together to examine, understand, and strengthen the interdependent role we have with each other and with nature. Our mutual concern is creating and maintaining healthy, non-violent communities.

We will introduce you to teachers, practitioners and leaders in sustainable development and technology. These instructors understand how to make use of resources in ways that are socially profitable and without destroying the ecological balance of an area.

  Why Call this organization Emergence?
Emergence Experience: Latin American Ecotourism, Native American tourism, Teen Naturalist tourism

Consider the shapes of galaxies and hurricanes.  How do they compare with ant colonies, swarms of bees, a flock of birds or a herd of elk? These emergent structures are more than the sum of their parts. The emergent order will not arise if the various parts simply coexist: the interaction of these parts is crucial. Similarly, the oral histories of Indigenous people world wide contain their emergence story. These stories tell of how complex living beings and life-forms came to be, revealing an interconnectedness that continues through the present day.

We call this organization Emergence because we are not a stand alone entity. No single group can do this work alone. We have to come together.

“It's neither change nor technology that threatens the integrity of the ethnosphere. It is power—the crude face of domination. In every instance, these societies are not failed attempts of modernity. They're not archaic, destined to fade away. They are dynamic, living, vital cultures that are being driven out of existence by identifiable external forces.”     —Wade Davis, ethnobotanist, and writer
